Why I Unfollowed You -or- Get Off My Twitter Lawn

Let’s get some things out of the way right up front here. I like Twitter (and other social media). Heck – By day, I am a software architect for a “community” web site with plenty of social media magic mixed in. I also realize there is no “right way” to use social media. These are my personal views. If they rub you the wrong way, I’ve probably already unfollowed you. Finally, I’m not trying to get a Twitter High Score. While I would love to have millions of followers to pimp my music projects to, it would mean just that many more who see my late night drunken one liners.

Some of you have fancy Twitter tracking tools, some of you obsess over your followers list, and some of are you are puzzled that I wasn’t familiar with the oh so witty remark you made earlier in the week. Yes – it’s true. I unfollowed you. Now, don’t take it personally. Well, maybe take it personally. Let’s see why I may have kicked you to the virtual curb.

You have multiple accounts and are constantly retweeting yourself. You’ve got a side project or three. Awesome. If I’m interested in it, I’ll follow it. If not, I’ll just stick with your main account. But here you come with your RT fever. I consciously decided not to read those tweets, but you seem to know better than me and will make sure I see them anyways. I get and support the occasional cross promotion for your new followers, but give me a break.

You abuse the Quote style retweet. Some of you are hopping up and down to tell me that I can turn off retweets from specific accounts if I don’t like the above scenario. I know all about it and use it to great effect. Unfortunately it blocks all retweets. Except those pesky old school ones where you add your witty content to it. If I’ve already flipped the no retweet switch and I still think your a bit spammy, it’s time to part ways.

You cross post every tweet to Facebook. If we’re connected on both sites, I don’t need to read it twice. Given the two, I’ll opt for Facebook, because people really get butthurt when you unfriend them there.

You RT for contests on a daily basis. Hey, we’re all human and a chance for a Colorware Macbook Pro is sometimes too hard to pass up, but if you’re retweeting everyday for low dollar items you need to do one of two things: create an account just for your spam or dig deep in your wallet and just buy the damn thing.

You have a one track mind. No, not that track. I’m good with that. Some of my personal contacts seem to use Twitter almost exclusively to ramble about a single topic. Good for you. I’ll see you on Facebook or at happy hour.

Your business/service is mixing news with a feed of some sort. I really want to stay in touch with some websites. If they are having a sale or a service disruption, twitter is the perfect place for me to be informed. But keep the automated data feeds separate. Just because I am interested in your music hosting service doesn’t mean I want to know everytime someone else uploads a file.

You are a music promotion account hyping pop and R&B. Yes, I am a self-described music junkie and I do produce music but for the most part my tastes are more specific. Sure there are great tracks coming out by the artists you’re pimping but I’m sure one of the eleventy jillion blogs I read will let me know when the next Rebecca Black is peaking (hopefully this reference will need to be Googled by next week).

Phew. That felt good to get off my chest. I’m sure there will be some retaliation. Oh well.

What are your Twitter pet peeves? Feel free to add your thoughts in the (moderated) comments.

Another reason I unfollowed you: An automated Direct Message when I followed you. Spam me once shame on you…

Percolator – A Mixtape

This one is a bit scattered, much like life has been for me the past month or so. Truthfully, I am putting this out just so I can sneak one of my remixes in. Last year, I put out remixes under the names fourthrock, latenightmakeoutdisco, and Twee Pop Violence. I usually don’t reveal which of the edits on a given mixtape are mine, and 2011 will see that trend continue :) Let’s just say I had fun remixing this remake of a classic track. With less than four weeks to SXSW, I’ll be pretty busy until its over. See you on the other side!

Siriusmo – Einmal In Der Woche Schreien
BeatauCue – Disque Oh! (Eumig & Chinon Remix)
MNDR – Jump In (Discmann’s Off The Wagon Remix)
Oh Land – Sun of a Gun (Savage Skulls Remix)
Idiotproof – Sandwiches (Drunk Off Pancakes Remix)
Groove Theory – Tell Me (Brenmar House Mix)
Natalia Kills – Mirrors (Frankmusik Obsidian Overkill Remix)
Chromeo – Don’t Turn The Lights On (Christian Martin Remix)
Lucky Date – Ho’s & Disco’s (Midnight Conspircy Remix)
Little Dragon – Never Never (SBTRKT Remix)

Dada Life – White Noise / Red Meat (Bassjackers Remix)
- Bonus -
Zenit Incompatible – Easy To Be Free

Resolutions

Despite my disclaimer earlier that resolutions wouldn’t kick in until the work week, it’s been a pretty successful week.

Last year, I had three “restrictive” resolutions: Don’t do this, No more of that, etc. All three had been broken by kickoff of the Rose Bowl. While I was able to regroup and find some success, I also found that telling myself “No” is not the best way to go about achieving change.

This year my resolutions are more “aspirational”: Do more of this, Be more like this, etc. So far it has been a breeze AND a great feeling of accomplishment even after only a week. Each and every night I have looked back on the day’s events and identified a win. Truth be told, I have been thinking about these changes for a few months, since the Temple Burn. I think the extra time helped internalize what my goals for the coming year really are.

Here’s wishing you luck on your New Year’s resolutions.

Hyper Tuned – A Mixtape

Well, the whole title is Hyper Tuned In To Hipster Shit, and was inspired by a conversation with a friend of mine, who was complaining that I and her other DJ friends were constantly bombarding her with links to new music and remixes (I’m looking at you, Mookie!).

Anyway, lots of good music coming out this summer season, and I have more than can fit in one mix, so for the next couple of outings, the genres won’t be “so” sprawling. This mix is a straight-up electrohouse mix. Sorry, no LateNightMakeoutDisco – that should be coming out next week.

Cabana – A Mixtape

11:30pm. It’s 90 degrees out. We’re in the shallow end of the pool dancing under the stars…

Unless, like me, you’re in Portland, where it has been pissing down rain for the last eleventy-jillion months. Fortunately, there is a cure, and it is called Las Vegas. We are heading down there for a little rest, relaxation and ruckus this weekend. Oh sure, you say, r&r from what? Well, let me tell you, traveling up and down the West Coast for music festivals really takes it out of a person!

On a whim, I decided I needed a little soundtrack to get my head in the right space for it. Not my normal mixtape stuff but it’s already making me think about our private cabana at the pool…

Something Good Can Work (The Twelves Remix) – Two Door Cinema Club
Lay The Manekin (Boogie Corp vs DMX Krew) – Stas Twee

Sasquatch 2010 Recap (and a bonus Portland concert)

My “Whole Bunch of Concerts” season is coming to a close, and honestly – phew! I need to recuperate. Normally, we choose either Coachella or Sasquatch, but this year we went to both. Throw in a bunch of local shows, and the calendar has been packed. This Friday’s Glitch Mob show should be the last for a couple of weeks. Oh right…. Vegas trip in two weeks. Hell – I can sleep when I am dead.

The core Portland crew made it out to Eastern Washington: Jamie, Shelly, and Colin. We were also joined by our Norwegian friend Arjo, who was able to combine a work trip here with the show.

On Friday, we picked up the RV. Arjo’s flight was delayed so Shelly, Colin, and I headed out on the road. Got a chance to stop at the Double Mountain Tap House in The Dalles and filled up a few growlers for the trip. Between traffic and our RV travel speed, we were able to take a quick beer break in Yakima and meet up with Arjo.

All we had was an hour or so ahead of us and we would be there. Well.. an hour or so of drive time and close to 3.5 hours in the entrance line. First benefit of the RV realized: our own mobile bathroom! Finally, we made our way into Premier Camping, nabbed a great spot near the shower trucks, and started making friends with the neighbors. Now I could be wrong, but I think we were surrounded by Canadians. Well, them, and the crew from a Boise alternative music radio station. All in all though, nice friendly people that we hung out with for most of the weekend.

On Saturday, we spent the morning getting tickets for Arjo, then headed in. In standard festival fashion, we bounced around a lot, but managed to listen to OK Go, Broken Social Scene, The National, Vampire Weekend, and Z-Trip. Listened to Deadmau5 from the comfort of our camp.

Sunday we hopped in Arjo’s car and headed out to Ellensburg for supplies and a couple of hours at the river. Too cold to go swimming but nice to relax and toss the frisbee around. As the afternoon wrapped up, Jamie showed up from Seattle. Using our secret hacker skills (sharpie and parking pass stub) we got both her and Arjo’s cars into our campsite. Sunday’s bands included They Might Be Giants (from campsite), Tegan and Sara, The xx, LCD Soundsystem, Pavement, A-Trak, Public Enemy, Massive Attack, and Booka Shade.

Monday, as usually the case during these long weekend parties, was spent complaining about our hangovers, and postponing getting ready for the show. Arjo had to be back in town bright and early Tuesday, so headed back to Portland. The girls weren’t ready to head in, so Colin and I went and caught Passion Pit, She & Him, and No Age. By that time, we were tuckered out, and headed back to camp. The girls stayed to see Boys Noize.

The “quiet time” gave me a second wind, so later that night Colin, Shelly, and I headed into the wild apocalypse of General Camping, bouncing from sound system to sound system into the night.

And that was it. Tuesday morning rolled around and we said our goodbyes. By the time we emptied the RV, returned it, and got home. It was nearly 6pm. Time for an early bed, right?

So…. The Buzzcocks played in Portland last night. Despite being drained from the weekend, there was no way I was going to miss seeing them. Seriously, they are in my top 5 of all times – the kind of band that basically shaped the music I like. So, hoping for a miracle burst of energy, I headed out to Berbati’s at 8:15. Of course, The Buzzcocks weren’t scheduled to play until 10 or so. Doh! Bracing myself at the bar with some red bulls, I waited.

And I am so glad I did. Managed to poke my way up front right near the stage and proceed to dance, sweat, and wear the biggest smile on my face as they ran through their set. So many random associations from times past flew through my mind. Hearing some of the songs that have been my “theme song” at points in my life live was incredible. They even looked like they were enjoying themselves – something a lot of “reunion bands” don’t necessarily do.

And with that I called it a night. Still can’t believe I was vertical today at work, but am definitely sleeping early tonight.

Hmmmm… now about that Killing Joke show tomorrow…

Music For Your Earhole – A new mixtape

It’s been nearly two weeks since we got back from Coachella, and just over a month or so to go before Sasquatch, so it felt like the right time to record another mix. I typically am motivated by hearing that “one new track” that gets played on repeat for days, and this time there were two – Bit Funk’s remix of Florrie’s Panic Attack and the remake of Inner City’s Good Life by Geeneous.

Crimewave (Midnight Conspiracy Remix) – Crystal Castles
The Other Side (Extended Mix) – Seb
Nights (DJ Spider Remix) – Pase Rock
Panic Attack (Bit Funk) – Florrie
Only You Can Make You Happy (PUNCHES remix) – Au Revoir Simone
Good Life (remix) – Geeneus ft. Katy B
Daydreaming (Helsinki 78-82 remix) – Kid Sister
Get A Grip (The Loops of Fury Remix) – Dirty Super Car
I Wanna See You – The Aston Shuffle
Trial and Errors – Razmataz Lorry Excitement
I Wanna Be You (Grum remix) – Night Bus
Crave You (Bxcentric remix) – Flight Facilities
Lick – Sean Roman

(download)

(The “hidden” bonus track is an old Dunproofin’ bootleg that just seems to capture the mood of this weekend for me. Enjoy!)
