To be exact, I broke the proximal phalanxes of my left index, middle, and ring fingers – right near the knuckle line. Doc says its one of the nastier breaks he’s seen and its good I write code for a living and not wield a hammer or other grip related activity.

The hand specialist said no to surgery, but instead I am doing twice a week therapy. At each session, they are molding a new lightweight splint specifically for where I am in my recovery.

Ongoing pics of the damage/recovery are here at Flickr

I think I got out of it what I wanted. It was a shame that the two dev related talks (themes and plugins) were held at the same time.

More than any nugget of information I got during a talk, I think the most valuable thing I took away was a general sense of what is possible to accomplish with the framework in general. I purchsed a couple of new domain names today and hopefully some of these new ideas will surface there shortly.

No, not NerdCamp, although I’m sure there will be some similarities. This Saturday is WordCamp, a day long conference/seminar about all things WordPress. So why did I sign up for it last month?

True, this thing runs on WordPress, but thats not exactly a compelling reason to go. I guess it comes down to a couple of reasons. When I first started tackling custom themes, the whys and wherefores weren’t exactly obvious. I do have a better handle on the structure now. My reliance on a modded theme instead of using the custom one that is currently a collection of images and CSS snippets on my hard drive is, however, an indication that my handle is loosely gripped.

I also want to know more about the internal plug-in architecture. I have a couple of ideas for side projects that need more than blog functionality, but I am reluctant to build out a whole web site. When I do that, I tend to go overboard, overengineer, etc. If I can extend the WordPress platform for those bits of functionality I need, it would be a big win.

Finally, I guess its to network a bit. As a fairly well experienced software architect in this town, I tend to shy away from professional networking. Its all a bit cheesy and mostly chest puffing. Perhaps if I come at it a bit sideways, through my avocation instead of vocation, I can build up a more robust circle of acquaintances that, when it comes down to it, are still technical in nature.

So, thats where I’ll be Saturday. Cheers!

Lots of stuff coming up in the next week or three. I can’t say that I am going to hit up all of these events, but they are definitely poking at my little brain.

Thursday (7/24) – Portland Timbers home game vs. Carolina RailHawks.

Friday (7/25) Either group outing to the Drive-In or DJ Shadow and Cut Chemist at Roseland (probably drive in – havent been to one in forever!)

Saturday (7/26) Girl Talk at Roseland. This show should be super fun. The Feed The Animals album is great. Listening to Girl Talk Murders Seattle – Live at Chop Suey gives me great hope for this show. (psst – follow the Feed The Animals link and you can download it for free/name your own price).

Sunday (7/27) Chromeo at Berbati’s Pan. May be too tuckered out for this show, considering I just saw them at Coachella.

Saturday and Sunday (7/26/727) Oregeon Brewer’s Fest at the Waterfront

Monday (7/28) Weekly bar trivia at Chez Jose (eastside). Will Sparklemotion return to dominance, or is this the week apathy totally kills us off.

Thursday (7/31) Last Thursday in NE.

Saturday (8/2) Red Bull Flugtag at Waterfront Park.

Saturday and Sunday (8/2/83) Bones and Brew in the Pearl

Sunday (8/10) Providence Bridge Pedal. Our crew has decided to do the 8 bridge/24 mile route. Unless someone signed us up for the 11 bridge/37 mile route. Better step up my daily rides.
