Just saying that if I see a magazine with Angelina Jolie on it and the headline is “Its all about the twins!”, my mind does not immediately go to her newborn children.

This sucks. The Prids are one of my favorite local bands, despite their militant vegan attitudes. Apparently, their tour van blew a tire, they lost control, and rolled the van. It was serious enough that a group member was airlifted from the scene.

This article is a really good read for those who are either considering starting a business or are working at a new venture. As someone who is doing both, a lot of the “rules” really hit home for me.

Some of the rules that stood out for me are:

#7 No Offices.

At first my inclination was to agree, and then throw the caveat in about someone needing privacy. His counter is that there should never be anything private in a startup, and upon reflection, I agree.

#9 Keep The Organization Flat

Absolutely. Communication is only possible amongst equals. People who demand titles and hierarchies are interested in success – but primarily their own.

As I work on getting the day job financed, and kicking off the two side projects, I’ll definitely keep these rules in the front of my mind.

a great band with a great group of people to enjoy them with.

i think we lose sight of that sometimes. the people i saw this show with were not just  bodies taking up space. they were people I love spending time with. the fact that half of them had no idea of the magnitude of the awesome that was about to be poured down their  gullet really had no effect.

so… this wont be the standard concert review. of course i loved jamc. what can i say that makes that more evocative. what i can talk about is the fact that:

• brett’s band sounded better than i have ever heard them before
• they were named after the headliner!
• rest of bulleted list edited / deleted for propriety

The past week or so I’ve put my greedy little hands on a bunch of newish music, so I figured a quick roundup was in order.

• Wire – Object 47 – Awesome album.  Can’t wait to see them on tour later this year.
• Beck – Modern Guilt – Meh. Not outright crap, but its definitely not getting a relisten any time soon.
• Booka Shade – The Sun and The Neon Light – Good. Not as housey as Movements. A bit more atmospheric.
• Cansei De Ser Sexy (CSS) – Donkey – Fun throwaway music.
• Girl Talk – Feed The Animals – I already mentioned that I think this is the Summer album of the year.
• Sigur Rós – Með Suð í Eyrum Við Spilum Endalaust – Its the same old Sigur while being something completely new at the same time. Good summery tunes.
• The Hold Steady – Stay Positive – I like the alt-rock sound but not a fan of the lead singer. Maybe on a second pass through?

What new music are you listening to?

So, my work life just got interesting; and by interesting I mean tumultous, uncertain, and nervewracking.

Its no secret that we have been trying to find financing for our little startup. The investment environment right now is horrible. We’ve had people bemoan the fact that would love to fund us, but cash is tight. A recent deal with a European investment group would have given us a hugh chunk of change, but the deal was extremely unfavorable to our continued ownership of the company. On the bright side, there are two deals in the oven right now. They just wont be ready in the next month or so.

So, today, some hard choices were made. At our current operating costs, we couldn’t keep payroll going. We made the decision to lay everyone off, while we continue to chase financing. We are, however, giving severance in an amount to make up the difference between our salaries and unemployment insurance. With just those expenses, we have 3 months or so to nail down a deal.

My personal plan is to kick back for a month or so. At that point, there will be some solid news of the financing. If it looks like its going to happen, hang in and wait to start up again. If not, use the next two months to find a new permanent gig.

Its the middle of July, I dont have to go to work, and am getting paid my full salary for the next 3 months. I guess there are worse ways to lose a job.

This movie came across my path in a list of recent DVD releases. Saw Patton Oswalt, Winona Ryder, Julie Bowen, and Leslie Bibb and was intrigued. All people that I like and I hadn’t heard of this movie? Got it in the queue, and tonight was the night it was destined to be watched.

I can not recommend this movie more.

It is definitely quirky. It is mid-90′s Miramax if that means anything to you. But the writing and the story were excellent.

This is the kind of movie that too much information ahead of time spoils the plot, but here goes: Imagine you receive an email with a list of all the people you’ve slept with.  Creepy? sure. Maybe one of your friends is messing with you. But what if that list continues on for another 30 or 40 names? How does the supposed knowledge of your future conquests change the way you live your life?

Any more and I might ruin the vibe of the movie, but trust me – add this to your netflix/bit torrent queue. You’ll enjoy it.
