This is mostly copy and pasted from a email exchange I just had. We were discussing the cyclone in Burma, and I inquired if I had told my story about how I met HRH The Prince of Burma (in exile)… and here we pick up the story.
…we were sitting in a cafe in Prague, when Colin brought up his famous “Two Triangle Family Tree” question: If we all supposedly descended from a single pair of people, the family tree would be descended downward from them, but we all have two parents who had two parents each, so it looks as if we are the focal point, and it expands upwards. Yes yes yes, its a false argument and is really just designed to get people to argue and see if they have religious leanings.
Anywho… I, completely out of character mind you, was a bit drunk, and I went into a rant about how royal family trees were less like trees and more like flagpoles, considering all the historical inbreeding there had been.
At that point, an Asian man with a British accent inserted himself into our conversation. He called me to task on my statements, and a spirited discussion ensued. He knew alot about royal families and not just western nations. At some point, we asked how he knew so much and he told us who he was. We of course thought it was bullshit, but hey, on vacation you can be who you want, right?
That prompted my tale of how my great grandfather lost our landed Prussian nobility titles in a poker game. He was really intrigued by the tale, and we were talking about the differences between heriditary titles and landed titles, etc. Of course, Prussian military prowess was discussed and he offered me a command position in his military when he regained his title.
Laughs were had, drinks were drunk, etc. When it came time to pay, he wouldn’t let us pay, and quietly pulled out his black AMEX. A quick glance at the name on the card showed “H.R.H. Prince of Burma”. Colin and I exchanged glances but said nothing.
The next day we did a little googling.
And were shocked that we had actually been drinking with the Prince. He was in town for an economic forum.
So, lets hope this cyclone did its job, and the way is paved for me to be the new Burmese Generalissimo.
